Speedriding Beginner Course 1

Only for paragliding pilots and good skiers

The course starts in:

Course Description

The four-day Speedriding Beginner Course is designed for beginners with no prior speedriding or speedflying experience. We take a step-by-step approach to get to know this fast new wing in a safe environment. We will gradually progress in relation to both the terrain and the flight tasks. Don’t worry, if you have already done a few unauthorized flights (“Schwarzflüge”), you won’t be bored. We challenge everyone individually at their personal level so that everyone can benefit from the course. Four days is a short time to learn a new sport.
The course lasts only 4 days, but please reserve all 6 scheduled days, as winter weather can often be stormy! Two of these are backup days that we will not use if everything goes to plan. This eliminates the need for an alternative course date. We will decide on short notice which 4 days the course will actually take place and will inform you in the course’s WhatsApp chat.

We run this beginner course multiple times, which is why they are numbered… you do not need to attend it more than once! 🙂

Goal

Learn the basics of speedriding. While you will not become a Pro in just four days, our goal is to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills required to continue practicing independently, allowing you to master and enjoy the sport safely moving forward.

Location

We have many different interesting Ski resorts for speedriding near Interlaken and we normally use 2 or 3 different resorts in every course and just buy single day ski passes. The ski resorts we usually go to are; Mürren, Kleine Scheidegg-Männlichen, Lenk, Lauchernalp, Niederhorn, Hasliberg.

Prerequisites

We highly recommend completing a minimum of 200 paragliding or miniwing flights before commencing speedriding or speedflying. Prior experience with miniwings or “ski and fly” is highly advantageous when starting out.
Regarding skiing technique: You must be able to navigate off-piste terrain with a reasonable level of proficiency. Experience shows that strong skiing skills are more beneficial initially than flight skills. Less experienced skiers tend to progress more slowly, resulting in more time spent flying rather than riding on the snow.
If you wish to prepare for the course, we strongly advise practicing your ground handling as much as possible. Speedriding is essentially ground handling while skiing.

Insurance

Insurance is the sole responsibility of the participant. We strictly require that you hold accident insurance that explicitly covers speedflying. If you plan to fly your own wing, you must also carry third-party liability insurance, such as the coverage provided by the SHV (Swiss Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association / Helvetia).
Please note that speedriding and speedflying are classified as hazardous sports (“Wagnis”) on the SUVA list, which can lead to a significant reduction in daily benefits (Taggeld) in the event of an accident causing absence from work. In such cases, you may only receive 40% instead of the standard 80% of your salary during your period of incapacity. However, rescue and medical treatment costs are always fully covered by the mandatory accident insurance for Swiss residents. Please be aware that after two years of continuous incapacity for work, daily benefit payments cease, and you would transition to an invalidity pension (IV), which ideally remains unaffected by reductions.

If receiving only 40% of your salary for several months would cause financial hardship, we strongly recommend taking out supplementary accident insurance for hazardous sports to prevent any reductions in daily benefits. You may already be covered for hazardous activities through your employer, so we advise verifying this beforehand. Alternatively, affordable coverage options can be found through Dino Pedrocci at extrem-sport.ch.

Gear

Equipment Requirements
Wings: For participants who already know their long-term goals in speedflying, purchasing personal equipment prior to the course can be a viable option. However, if you are still undecided whether speedriding is the right sport for you, renting our equipment is highly recommended. We advise contacting Beni briefly to discuss the best approach for your specific situation. As an expert familiar with all speedriding and speedflying wings currently on the market, Beni can provide comprehensive advice on selecting the right wing for you. For personalized equipment consultation, please give him a quick phone call.

Harnesses: Speedriding and speedflying strictly require split-leg harnesses without a seatboard. Harnesses with a seatboard make the system too unstable and overly aggressive. Many seatboardless hike-and-fly harnesses are suitable, regardless of whether they are reversible models. A protector is not required for speedriding, but it is highly recommended for speedflying, although many pilots choose to fly without one. To verify if your current harness is suitable, please contact Beni by phone.

Reserve Parachutes: Because speedriding and speedflying are frequently performed close to the ground, a reserve parachute is often impractical. However, during high-altitude flights—such as when practicing barrel rolls—carrying a reserve parachute (typically in a front-mounted container) is highly recommended.

Skis: Since speedriding takes place off-piste, freeride skis are the ideal choice. For optimal performance, we recommend a ski width between 105 and 120 mm underfoot. Touring bindings and touring boots are perfectly suitable. Choosing the correct ski will significantly improve your off-piste skiing and overall speedriding experience. Beni is also available to advise you on purchasing the right skis.

Additional Gear: We highly recommend a back protector and a high-quality ski helmet. While telescopic poles, an avalanche transceiver, a probe, and a shovel are standard components of speedriding equipment, they are not strictly required for the duration of this course.

Ski Goggles: Clear visibility is crucial. Please bring unscratched ski goggles, ideally equipped with dual lenses or a specific lens optimized for flat-light and low-visibility conditions.

Accomodation

Accommodation is the sole responsibility of the participant and is not included in the course fee. Benis parents have a cheap AirBnB in Bönigen with 5 beds. Sometimes we have participants staying there.
