BGD Breeze Review – Our opinion
We haven’t flown it yet nore seen it. But since it’s a light version of the Base 3, the text below from the Base 3 is going to apply as well.
The Base 3 is a very special glider. It has the most reflex of any B-wing on the market, the shortest Lineset of any High-B wings and the most taper (short chord in the tips and long in the middle). It looks very special when you look up to the glider, also from the outside. The performance is similar to other High-B wings, slightly less than a Ikuma 3 P. But what separates the Base 3 from other High Bs is how easy and comfortable it is to fly. It’s the most pitch stable wing i have flown i think. It starts on launch, it doesn’t overshoot at all. It just magically stops there. However you also shouldn’t let go the A lines to early and put brakes on to early, it likes to fall back down then. In the air, it dampens a lot of the turbulence out for you, it will feel less turbulent on this glider. When your friends go landing because they are scared, you might keep on flying. When your friends tell you at the landing how bumpy they found it, you can smile and say it was easy and smooth. The Mentor 7 also has this comfort in turbulence, but the Base 3 has it even more. The Base 3 is so dampened, that many High-B pilots will find this wing boring and would not buy this. The Base 3 is also not very fast on fullbar, you have to load it well to make it fly 50km/h fullbar! But even at fullbar it’s very pitchstable, collapse stable and comfortable to fly in turbulence. Seriously, the Base 3 is a class on its own. You need to fly it to see how comfortable it is in turbulence. When thermalling, you can let go the outside brake and just trust the wing. It’s crazy, i have no idea how BGD achieved this. The Base 3 is not the most fun and dynamic wing to fly, but it still turn nice and works well in thermals. You don’t have to force it around. Specially when you release the outside break it turns very well.
Since the wing has a lot of taper; the tips are narrow but the middle of the wing has a very long chord. If you do get a frontal collapse, there will always be some surface left, chances you get a 100% frontal is smaller. Also when you get a bigger asymmetric, there is always quite some fabric left in the middle making lift. That’s probably one reason for the very gentle collapse behavior.
The Base 3 also have very short lines. Shorter lines means less energy you can build up in maneuvers. Not so much fun for wingovers, but it makes the wing even more forgiving. If you exit a spiral too quickly or do some other mistakes, with shorter lines everything is more forgiving. Also low turns or any unwanted pendulum close to the ground is less of a problem. In fact the pendulum is more predictable.
Because of the combination with this very short lines and this very high pitch stability, i think in some aspect the Base 3 is more forgiving than other Low-B wings, even High-A wings. I have the feeling the Base 3 is easy enough that you could actually teach a complete beginner with it. In my opinion BGD should not market the Base 3 as a high B wing.
The stallpoint is quite low, and it gets hard before it stalls. That’s great. Fullstalls are easy to fly, but there is big chance you end up with a small cravat, it’s kinda hard to reinflate the tips in time. But there is almost no shooting when you decide to let it fly.
The Base 3 is made of a heavy-duty 40g fabric, there is nothing lite on it. It’s a heavy glider and it packs up big. But it will last a long time. BGD is working on the Base 3 light also…
The risers look a bit like playmobil, they could be a little more simple and more sleek, but they work well and the B-C bridge works efficient.
This wing is perfect for all pilots that want to fly thermals and XC, but get scared quickly in turbulence. With the Base 3 you have wing that has the performance like the others, but it gives you the peace of mind you need so you can enjoy XC.
We think it’s the perfect wing for pilots that find a Niviuk Ikuma 3 to chatty and to nervous.
What we like
- Super high dampening in turbulence
- No shooting on take off, also not in strong winds
- collapse stable on bar
- fullbar collpses are very gentle
- Good performance
- High pitch stability
- BGD gliders are not expensive:-)
Good to know
- It’s full of the black perlon rods and needs to be packed nicely.
- Risers seem a little more complicated then needed
