Niviuk Ikuma 3 P Review – Our opinion
We call the Ikuma 3 P the big brother of the Kode P, since it packs super small and is very easy to fly and safe. It’s a 2.5 liner with a very nice handling, much nicer than the Ikuma 2P. The Ikuma 3 P has a bit of reflex and therefore most weight on the A-Lines. This makes it very collapse stable, specially when flying on Bar. You can control the pitch very well with the bridge-system it has on the risers. It’s bridge works with very light pressure, what makes it very comfortable to use. When using it, it’s important to pull B and C with the same amount. If you pull slightly more C, you get a wrinkle between B and C’s. That’s a clear sign you have removed the reflex of the wing, then you loose a lot of stability. You can feel the reflex of the wing when doing pitch-pendelums using your toggles. You really have to force it to reach some amplitude, it’s almost impossible to get it collapsing in front of you. The Ikuma 3 is very agile glider and it has quit a lot of roll. Doing big wingovers is very effortless and easy, with weighshift alone you can trow around the wing crazy. To make the Ikuma 3 turn, you need very little pull on one side. While thermalling it feels like your hands are almost symetric, thats how reactiv it is. It’s the complete opposite from the Ikuma 2, which needed a lot of pull to turn.
Most of the wing is made from the superlight 10D Fabric, that’s the same fabric they use on the Kode P or the Klimber 3. All the rods are Nitinol, so you can bend them how much you want, it doesn’t hurt it. The Ikuma 3 has no other rods than on the leading edge. Fewer rods also help it to pack down smaller. That’s what separates the Ikuma 3 P apart from all others. It packs down half the size from most other B+ wings, it’s amazing. Check out the pictures down here. Green is a Kode P 22, Yellow is the Ikuma 3 P 22 and Red is a Phi Maestro 2 light 22 which also packs really small.
It inflates and rises super easy with very little pull since it’s so light. It’s a dream to take off. It also doesn’t shoot, we think it’s very easy on take off. However it gets blown away with the slightest breeze since it’s so light. The risers make up quite a lot of weight, they are 350g, because they have 4 expensive heavy duty pulleys for the speedbar and the bridge system. But that weight is well invested, it makes using the speedbar and the bridge much more comfortable.
Big ears are very stable and effective, even when using fullbar. No flapping at all. No need to to a B3 stall. We think this is a really nice feature for a high B wing. When pulling some collapses, the reaction from the Ikuma is very gentle. They open again quick but softly, the wing doesn’t turn or dive much after big asymmetrics. Many high B’s have much more agressive reactions to collapses, specially on fullbar. The fullstall is also quite easy to control, the wing doesn’t shoot much on exit.
So far we haven’t found anything on it we don’t like. We are keen to fly it more!
In combination with an Arrow P or a Skywalk Range X-Alps 3 or any other super small and light podharness, you will get a super small and light pack.
