Nova Doubleskin Review – Our opinion
The Doubleskin 2 has not much in common with the first one, apart from the name. It’s a completely new design, based on the Prion 6. It has a highly stable airfoil, which has the lift far in front, hence a lot of pressure on the A-lines. It takes a to get a big collapse on the Doubleskin 2. And if it does collapse, it doesn’t care much and just keep going straight. Even when flying on Bar it super gentle. It’s quite surprising how little such a small highly wing turns after a big collapse. Having such a stable airfoil with such nice collapse recovery is quite unique and great to have on a wing many pilots fly often without a reserve. You can fully trust the Doubleskin 2 we think! Those stable airfoils are also great to learn wingovers; If your lines get a little slack, you don’t get a collapse straight away.
The Doubleskin 2 comes up much quicker then the first version, it doesn’t shoot really, but when you pull a little hard it needs to be stopped actively. Most pilots will like it a lot better the first Doubleskin that didn’t inflate nicely. The new one also works well when launching just with the A-risers. Ne special technique required anymore.
It also glides better than the first version and climbs noticeably better. Since it doesn’t roll too much, it’s a great wing to learn on also.
For some reason Nova decided to not make it super ultra lite like the first one, but a bit more durable. For students great, for those of us who want a super light and small to pack glider a bit of a shame. Nova also kept the slippery silicon coated side of the fabric outside, so it’s kinda hard to pack it small, it keeps sliding apart when trying to pack neatly. Also when you put it on the ground, it tends to slide down quicker than a Kode P for example, which has the slippery side inside not outside.
If you want to safest hike and fly wing on the market to fly confident without a reserve, the Doubleskin 2 is your wing.
What we like about the Doubleskin 2
- Inflates nice and fast
- very collapse stable in turbulence
- very gentle when it does collapse anyway
- Not too much / too little roll
- Nice easy to use risers, not super fidely
