Niviuk Skin 4P Review – Our opinion
The Skin 4 P is a pretty amazing single skin! We think single skins only make sense if they really have a weight and packing volume advantage. The Skin 4 P clearly has this. The 16 packs half the volume from the Kode 2 P 18, it’s impressive! It’s difficult comparing singleskins to normal wings, but if you do, you have to compare them with bigger ones. A singleskin always makes more lift with a given surface area than a normal wing, that’s why they fly slower. They don’t have to fly fast to generate your weight as lift. This lift is reached already at a lower speed… We found the Skin 4 P 16 flies about the same forward speed as a Kode 2 P 20. Yes it has more sink, so it glides less. But it glides surprisingly well for a singleskin! Maybe the 16 glides as well as a Kode 2 P 16….we want to try this, it could be very similar. (of course the Skin 4 P being much slower).
Launch;
It comes up super easy and quick. Tips are open immediately. If you pull really hard on it, it does tend to shoot a bit, but it’s easy to stop. Even in strong wind it’s quite ok. But it’s better to walk towards it a little bit in strong wind when pulling up, it can plug you if you’r not ready. But it’s much more forgiving and more easy than the XXLite 2 from ozone, which really likes to shoot on launch. As most singleskins it makes a lot of lift, also here you can compare the 16 size to a 20size standard wing. So you can really fly them small. Don’t be afraid flying a 14 or a 16 Skin 4 P unless you are a heavy pilot.
Flying;
Important to know is that it has no speedsystem. You can’t accelerate it. Most singleskins have a trimmer that doesn’t do much anyway. Niviuk left that away for keeping it simple. The Skin 4 P is very reactive on the toggles. It has some gokart feeling! But once you start doing wingovers, you realize it’s still a singleskin, the wing doesn’t wanna go below you. When you spiral it, it comes out super quick and pitches up but doesn’t shoot afterwards, very much like most other singleskins. Funny wise it is super reactive to toggle inputs, but not to weightshift.
Landing:
The flare is Ok but not great. If you make a “flare landing” and you swing in front of the wing and pull the brakes slowly, you can go up one meter. But if you pull the brakes when the wing is still in front, it generates sink instead of lift. That’s sketchy if you want to save yourself from swinging into the ground because you got the “flare landing” wrong…
If you just come from a steady flight hands up the flare is good enough for a soft landing, there is no need to make a “flare landing”. But i would not try to land in a boulderfield or somewhere in a leeside with sinking airpockets.
Construction;
It’s very well made, a very smart design to reduce weight and packing volume but still have a good glide ratio. In the air the wing looks well tensioned, not as many wrinkles as on other singleskins and not much fabric that is “fluttering” all the time. It’s really a piece of art when you look up!
