Our Opinion: Ozone Dragonfly Review
The Dragonfly is the easiest speed-wing we have ever flown. Yes, it is still a proper speed-wing! It’s got big trimmers and has quite a big range of speed. You can go very slow, but if you open the trimmers it will still go surprisingly fast. The wing is stable in turbulences, also with trimmers open.
What makes it the easiest speed-wing on the market is the lack of roll in the air and pitch on take off. On take off with trimmers closed, it doesn’t overshoot unless you are using the A-riser to inflate. If you launch with trimmers open, then you have to stop it actively. Once in the air, it goes straight like a parachute, it doesn’t do ping-pong and roll from one side to another from itself. If you are pulling a turn, the moment you let go the brake it goes back to straight flight, without rolling to the other side much.
This high roll stability is great for novices with a skydiving background. The Dragonfly offers a parachute like feeling with more glide. Loaded with about 80kg you have a glide-ratio of about 5 with closed trimmers.
We use the Dragonfly a lot for teaching beginners without previous mini-wing experience. So they won’t be overwhelmed by the roll of a Rapido or other speed-wings.
The Dragonfly has the same risers as the Rapido, just a little shorter. Nice and clean risers, very easy to adjust trimmer system. It’s got the same sheathed and colored lines as the Rapido, that also helps beginners sorting their lines.
What we like about the Dragonfly:
- Very pitch-stable on takeoff with trimmers closed
- Lots of lift for foot-launching
- Easy to inflate in strong winds
- Huge speedrange
- Low stallpoints
- Very roll stable
- Stable and safe in turbulences
- Thick colored lines
- Clean risers with easy to use trimmer system
- New size 14 available as well for lighter pilots
Good to know
- It’s made out of strong fabric to last long, so it’s not a light wing.
- We recommend to load the 16 with at least 70kg and the 18 with at least 80kg tow
Summary: If you have limited to no paragliding skills, or just want a worry free wing this is the wing for you to get into speedflying. Also if you feel like a R3 15 or a Mirage 15 is too small for you, than a Dragonfly 16 or 18 is a good choice.
